National 4 Skills for Work: Early Learning and Childcare is an introductory qualification that will help learners to understand some of the demands and responsibilities of working in the early learning and childcare sector.
At National 4, learners cover basic topics in each area and begin to develop relevant skills such as teamwork skills and helping to plan play experiences.

This course comprises of four units. The content of the course focuses on the development of basic hand skills across the disciplines of mechanical, electrical/electronic, fabrication and manufacture and assembly. Central to the content are the generic employability skills valued by employers in an engineering sector. These skills are developed in each of the four units and are assessed at least twice during the course. These add value to the development of the specific vocational skills.
Course content
You will study the following units:
- Engineering Skills: Mechanical (National 4)
Learners are required to select the correct tools and materials required to safely manufacture an artefact. During the manufacture, learners will read simple engineering drawings, measure and mark, select appropriate materials and work to specified tolerances. - Engineering Skills: Electrical/Electronic (National 4)
In this unit learners will select the correct tools and components required to construct a basic functional extra low voltage electrical/electronic circuit from a given diagram and specification. - Engineering Skills: Fabrication (National 4)
In this unit learners will select the correct tools, materials and equipment required to manufacture an artefact using cutting, hot and cold forming and mechanical and thermal joining techniques. - Engineering Skills: Manufacture and Assembly (National 4)
Learners will select and safely use the correct tools and materials to manufacture, assemble and complete functionality tests on an artefact. Learners will evaluate and report their findings on the manufacture, assembly and functionality tests of the artefact.
- Pupils will need to have achieved or be working towards minimum National 4 in Maths and English.

This course allows you to achieve units from the SVQ Professional Cookery qualification at SCQF level 4. It focuses on developing basic cookery skills and introducing you to how a professional kitchen operates.
You will take part in hands-on learning in professional kitchens, working with ingredients, equipment and techniques used in the hospitality industry. As well as being a useful introduction to professional cookery, the course also helps you develop practical skills you can use in everyday life.
This course is suitable for learners with a keen interest in cooking who want to explore the hospitality and catering sector and build confidence in the kitchen.
Course content
You will develop practical cookery skills that focus on the fundamentals of working safely and effectively in a professional kitchen environment.
You will spend time learning how to prepare and cook a range of dishes, including bread and dough products like baguettes and pizzas, cakes and pastries, sandwiches, and vegetable-based dishes such as soups, curries, stir-fries and rice-based meals. Alongside this, you will learn about food hygiene, health and safety, and good working practices that are essential in any professional kitchen.
Entry requirements
You should be working at or towards SCQF level 4 and be able to demonstrate an interest in cooking and working in a kitchen environment.
This course can support progression to SVQ Professional Cookery at SCQF level 5, either as a Senior Phase course or through full-time study at college. It can also help prepare you for further training or entry-level opportunities within hospitality and catering.

Central to the content are the generic employability skills valued by employers in the construction sector. These skills are developed in each of the three units and are assessed at least twice during the course.
Course content
- One Brick Walling – Learners will select and use the correct tools, equipment, and materials required to manufacture an artefact. During the manufacture, learners will read simple construction drawings, measure, and mark, select appropriate materials, and work to specified tolerances. The learner will also develop and use basic construction skills of building different types of brick walls, laying mortar beds, and pointing joints.
- Bench Joinery - Learners will select and use the correct tools, equipment, and materials required to manufacture an artefact. During the manufacture, learners will read simple construction drawings, measure, and mark, select appropriate materials, and work to specified tolerances. The learner will also develop and use basic construction skills of manufacturing a range of different woodworking joints, manufacturing a frame, and drawing a setting out rod.
- Decorative Painting - Learners will select and use the correct tools, equipment, and materials required to manufacture an artefact. During the unit candidates will follow instruction on how to complete different types of painting techniques, measure, and mark, select appropriate materials, and work to specified tolerances. The learner will also develop and use basic construction skills of different types materials, and how to store and clean correctly.
- Efficient Construction Practices – During this unit, learners will learn how to work efficiently within the construction trades, this unit's evidence is gathered through the three practical units.
- To achieve this award, you will be required to undertake both practical & theory elements for each unit, overall, the award is split: 75% practical and 25% theory.
Entry is at the discretion of the centre and while no formal entry qualifications are required, it would be beneficial if learners embarking on the course demonstrated:
- An interest in construction
- An ability to work in numeracy and literacy at SCQF level 4
- Some aptitude for graphical forms of communication
- Completed a woodworking subject or National 4 Construction Skills for Work

On attainment, you can progress onto the full time National Qualification Children and Young People or study further school link subjects at Higher Level at UHI North, West and Hebrides.

The course is suitable for learners who want to continue developing their skills and prepare for further training or work in hospitality and professional cookery.
Course content
You will develop practical skills used in a professional kitchen, building on what you have already learned in SVQ Professional Cookery SCQF 4. The course focuses on improving technique, confidence and consistency when working with food.
You will spend time developing skills in areas such as bakery, vegetable preparation and knife work. This includes preparing ingredients for a range of dishes, practising safe and efficient knife techniques, and learning how different preparation methods support quality and presentation in a working kitchen.
Entry requirements
You should normally have achieved the SVQ Professional Cookery at SCQF Level 4 or be working towards it.
You should also be working at SCQF Level 5 and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in professional cookery.
This course can support progression to further hospitality or professional cookery programmes at UHI North, West and Hebrides. It can also help prepare you for entry-level roles within the hospitality industry, where you can continue to develop your skills in a professional kitchen setting.

This is a hands-on course that supports learners who are considering further study or work in music or sound-related areas.

Throughout the course, you will study the following units:
- Appreciation of Music - explore a wide range of music genres, developing listening skills and an understanding of different musical styles and contexts.
- Sound Engineering and Production - develop practical skills in recording and mixing audio using multi-track recording equipment and sound production techniques.
- Creative Project - plan, produce and evaluate a creative music project in response to a given brief, developing independence and project-based working skills.
- Introduction to the UK Music Industry - gain an understanding of how the UK music industry is structured, including key organisations and how artists, producers and businesses work together.

Entry requirements
You should normally have National 5 Maths, English and a science or computing-related subject. You should also be working towards one or two Highers over S5 and S6, ideally including Computing.
If you do not meet these exact qualifications, you may still be considered after completing a screening activity at the college.

Industry experience and skills development
You will complete a work placement in a childcare or early learning setting. This allows you to apply your learning in real situations and work towards selected SVQ level 2 units. During placement, you will be assessed on tasks such as supporting children’s development, helping with daily routines and working as part of a professional team.
Entry requirements
You should normally have three passes at National 5, ideally including a literacy-based subject such as English, Geography or Psychology. You should also have an interest in working with children and young people and be able to show an understanding of the early years or childcare sector.
Applications are considered individually, and relevant experience or interest will be taken into account. You may be asked to provide a reference and take part in a short interview.
You will also need to complete a PVG check, which is required for anyone working or volunteering with children or vulnerable people. The college will guide you through this process if you are offered a place.
If you wish to complete this Foundation Apprenticeship in one year, you must be able to manage both the study and work placement commitments. You should discuss this option with your guidance teacher before applying.
This Foundation Apprenticeship can help you take your next step into the early learning and childcare sector. Many learners move into work-based qualifications such as Modern Apprenticeships or SVQs, which allow you to continue developing your skills while working in the sector. You may also choose to continue your studies, with options such as HNC Childhood Practice, HND or degree-level routes in childcare and education. The course also provides a strong foundation if you plan to work towards Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration in the future.

The work can be challenging but also highly rewarding, and the course helps you build the knowledge, communication skills and practical understanding needed to begin working confidently in adult care settings.

Online Learning
You will complete the NPA Social Services: Social Services and Healthcare (SCQF 6). This includes units in:
- Social Services in Scotland - learn about the role of social services, the types of support available and the values that underpin good practice.
- Safeguarding People - explore how to recognise and respond to concerns about safety and wellbeing.
- Communication in Care Relationships - develop communication skills for working with individuals and supporting their needs.
- Safe Practice and Wellbeing in Social Services - understand how to work safely, promote wellbeing and follow relevant guidance and legislation.
- Human Development and Social Influences - learn about factors that influence health and development across the lifespan.
Industry experience and skills development
You will also complete a work placement in an adult care setting. This gives you the opportunity to apply what you learn, develop professional skills and complete selected SVQ level 2 units. - Author Study and Research - you will choose a contemporary author and explore their writing process, style and influences. You will research their work, create an author profile and produce an imagined interview that demonstrates your understanding of their creative approach.
- Critical Essay - you will study a selection of contemporary novels with strong narrative voices and produce a well-structured 1,000-word essay. This develops your knowledge of narrative techniques and how writers use structure, point of view and style to shape a story.
- Reflection on Practice - you will reflect on what you have learned throughout the module and consider how these insights can support your development as a writer.
