One of the highest honours conferred by the university, the honorary doctorate was presented at the UHI North, West and Hebrides graduation ceremony, held today (Friday 7 November) at the Nevis Centre in Fort William.

Based in the Highlands, Dave has been a leading figure in the world of rock climbing for more than 30 years. Recognised internationally for his achievements, he has completed hundreds of first ascents across Europe. Among his most celebrated climbs are the groundbreaking ascents of Rhapsody on Dumbarton Rock and Echo Wall on Ben Nevis.

Beyond his impressive climbing career, Dave has shared his expertise through coaching, writing and multimedia content. His best-selling books on climbing training and injury prevention have made him of the most trusted and respected figures in the climbing community.

Dave also delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, sharing advice and insights from his extraordinary career. He told graduates:

“The honour of my honorary doctorate is to call myself a fellow graduate with all of you. I’m a coach, and so what I love to see the most is the excitement and energy of young people.

“I’ve found that energy and excitement has only increased in my life since I first graduated 22 years ago, and so I just want to encourage you that there is every probability that your life will also become more interesting, exciting and rewarding from here, not least because of the platform, the launchpad of education you’ve built for yourself with your studies here at UHI.”

Vicki Nairn, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UHI, said:

“Dave MacLeod has not only pushed the boundaries of climbing but has also given back to the community, empowering others to pursue their climbing goals safely and effectively.

“His dedication to excellence in climbing and his commitment to advancing the sport through education, coaching, and innovation are qualities we are proud to honour today.”
