Four parliamentary motions recognise UHI North, West and Hebrides achievements
Staff, students, research and partnerships at UHI North, West and Hebrides have been recognised in four Scottish Parliament motions lodged in the space of under two months.
The motions, lodged by MSPs from across Scotland between September and October, highlight the university’s contribution to Gaelic culture, environmental research, student sporting success and environmental policy.
Two of the four motions recognise work carried out by researchers at the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in Thurso, highlighting the international significance of research taking place in the north of Scotland.
The other two recognise the contribution of UHI North, West and Hebrides to the development of Cnoc Soilleir, the Gaelic cultural, educational and community centre in South Uist, and the sporting achievements of BA (Hons) Professional Golf student Josh Beveridge.
Motions are short statements written by MSPs to raise awareness of an issue or celebrate the work of a group, organisation or individual. Other MSPs can support a motion to show they agree with it, and once lodged they remain permanently available on the Scottish Parliament website.
The four motions are:
- Congratulating Cnoc Soilleir (lodged by Na h-Eileanan an Iar MSP Donald MacKinnon)
- Recognising UHI Researchers’ Involvement in the FutureMoss Project (lodged by Highlands and Islands MSP Kristopher Leask)
- Congratulating Josh Beveridge, BUCS Golf Tour Autumn Trophy Winner (lodged by Central Scot and Lothians West MSP Jenny Young)
- Congratulating UHI North, West and Hebrides Researchers on Award-winning Work to End Use of Lead Ammunition (lodged by Highlands and Islands MSP Ariane Burgess)
Lydia Rohmer, Principal and Chief Executive at UHI North, West and Hebrides, said: “This recognition reflects the impactful work taking place across the college, which is making a difference both in the communities in which our campuses are based and far beyond that, on an international level. I’m immensely proud to see this recognised in the Scottish Parliament and I would like to congratulate all whose efforts have been recognised by these motions.”
