Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"I chose a Modern Apprenticeship as I wanted to learn by doing. I liked the idea of learning in a real work environment, learning valuable skills whilst gaining an industry-recognised qualification."

What the apprenticeship involves

"My apprenticeship involved gaining experience working full-time in a fast-paced office environment whilst also working towards gaining an SVQ in Business and Administration. I had to complete eight units in total, which taught me how to balance learning with work. I found it worked best for me to complete my college work when I had slightly quieter periods at work or by designating time at the beginning of the week."

Building Confidence and Skills

"I gained technical knowledge such as learning company processes, using software, and maintaining records. The most valuable to me were the personal skills. When I started, I wasn't as confident and would question myself a lot. With support from my colleagues and UHI assessor, I became more independent and confident in the work I was producing. I am now confident that I can complete work to the required standard."

The Most Rewarding Part

"The most rewarding part was seeing my skills progress and knowing I can apply them to day-to-day activities and contribute to the team. Seeing the feedback on progress reports from my assessor and employer was always rewarding, as others were noticing my progress."

Future Plans

"I have now completed my Modern Apprenticeship and am in full-time employment at Gows Lybster as an Administrator / Document Controller. I hope to continue to learn new skills and progress further academically whilst still working in an administrative role."

My Advice

"I would definitely recommend a Modern Apprenticeship to anyone considering it. I have learnt so much - a variety of new skills whilst gaining a recognised qualification. I will always value the experience I have been given."

Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"It was a course option through my employment to help further my progression."

What the apprenticeship involves

"As a farm technician on a freshwater salmon farm, I carry out daily husbandry to ensure that both fish welfare and biosecurity are of the highest standard. This includes general upkeep and maintenance of the boats, pens, and warehouse, net installation and cleaning, working the feed system, and recording and logging information onto Aquafarmer.

Balancing work with learning varied with the seasons. When we were fallow (site empty), I was allowed to have set days for learning. This helped me progress through the units at a faster and more consistent pace."

Skills and Technical Growth

"I feel that fish health is where I really learned a lot, as it was easily my weakest point. I also think that I improved quite a bit with my technical skills and have become more hands-on in this aspect."

The Most Rewarding Part

"Just getting that recognition that I have learned and improved on all aspects within the industry. It gives me more pride to have this qualification in what I do for a living."

Future Plans

"I am due to start my Level 3 shortly with the aim to progress through the ranks with MOWI."

My Advice

"Go in with an open mind; you'll learn more than you would expect. It is very handy dealing with someone outside of your own sites and perhaps seeing things from a different perspective. I do feel like I have proved to myself that I can and do want to progress within the industry."

Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"I felt this route suited me better as I’m a very hands-on person. I learn better by doing rather than reading."

What the apprenticeship involves

"I work alongside veterinary professionals within the veterinary setting, where I complete many different tasks whilst being observed by my clinical coach in practice."

Skills and Growth

"Teamwork is a huge part of the profession, while also being able to work independently at times. A large part of veterinary nursing involves communicating between team members and talking to clients, so excellent people skills and communication skills are required. Numeracy also plays a large part in drug calculations; to begin with, I found this hard, however, I am now confident in this area."

The Most Rewarding Part

"Making lifelong friends with college classmates and colleagues alike. Being able to learn my chosen profession in “real life” rather than through a book."

Future Plans

"Work hard!"

My Advice

"I would highly recommend it to anyone who shares the same work ethic and learning type as me."

Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"I chose to do a modern apprenticeship as it allowed me to do hands on experience while learning at the same time. I also have the opportunity to earn money while learning and doing something I enjoy. I also have a clear career path ahead of me as I learn all the skills for my line of work along with learning theory work in the college alongside."

What the apprenticeship involves

"My apprenticeship involves learning how to use manual lathe and mills and gain valuable engineering work too. I work on CNC machines and make the metal casings for underwater cameras. This allows me to be using hand tools, precise measuring equipment and reading drawings as part of my job. I balance my work with learning as I work three days a week and am at college the other two."

Skills and Precision

"I have gained a variety of skills since starting my apprenticeship which involves learning how to operate machines and learn more about the engineering world. I have also gained skills on how to code the machines and am continuing to learn more about it each day. The most valuable skill I have learned is precision; with CNC machining the smallest mistake can lead to a part being out of tolerance and then leading to wasted material, so I always have to pay attention to detail."

The Most Rewarding Part

"The most rewarding parts about my apprenticeship are when I get big and sometimes challenging jobs completed. This helps me realize that I have gained so much experience and skills since starting my job just over a year and a half ago. I also find it very rewarding when I pass my college qualifications as it shows the work that I have done pays off."

Future Plans

"After completing my 4 year apprenticeship I hope to continue being a mechanical engineer. I enjoy working on CNC machines and I see them being a way forward in the engineering world. I am willing to keep learning and gain even more skills within the company and have a long term career out of what I do."

My Advice

"I would say that if you are thinking about doing a modern apprenticeship then 100% go for it. It was the best choice I have made within my studies. Although you need to work hard and balance the working life with studies, it is such a rewarding thing when you are getting qualifications on something you enjoy while earning a wage."

Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"I picked a modern apprenticeship because it suits how I learn. I like to be hands-on and getting real experience, not just theory. It means I can work, earn, and learn at the same time, which made more sense for me."

What the apprenticeship involves

"As an apprentice mechanical technician, my role involves working alongside experienced technicians and learning how to machine components to the required specification using CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, and manual machines. I get hands-on experience using different tools, reading technical drawings, coding machines, and following safety procedures. Alongside the practical work, I complete training assessments to build my technical knowledge and gain my qualification."

Skills and Problem Solving

"I've gained skills in setting up and running CNC machines, reading engineering drawings, and measuring parts accurately using tools like verniers and micrometres to ensure everything meets the correct tolerances. I think the most valuable skills I've gained are attention to detail and problem-solving. Running CNC machines requires precision, as even small mistakes can affect the final product. I've also learnt how to troubleshoot issues, like adjusting offsets or spotting when something isn't running right. That's helped me become more confident and independent in my work."

The Most Rewarding Part

"The most rewarding part has been seeing a finished part come out of the CNC machine that I have set up and run myself. Knowing that I've followed the drawings correctly, set up the machine properly, and produced something accurate within tolerance gives me a real sense of achievement."

Future Plans

"After completing my apprenticeship, I plan to continue developing my skills as a mechanical technician, especially in CNC machining. I want to gain more experience, become fully confident in setting up and programming machines independently, and keep improving my knowledge so I can take on more complex and challenging work."

My Advice

"My advice would be to go for it if you prefer learning by doing hands-on and practical things. It's a good way to earn money, gain qualifications, and build experience at the same time. Make sure you stay motivated, listen to feedback given to you, and take every chance to learn new skills."

Why I chose a Modern Apprenticeship

"I chose this route as I got to stay at home and could learn whilst earning at the same time."

What the apprenticeship involves

"My role involves making and testing underwater cameras. I sometimes get to be involved in the assembly side by making PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) and harnesses, which helps me develop new skills to use whilst making the cameras. I get two days release to the college to complete my NC6, and if I require any time to complete college work during work time, my employer is very flexible."

Learning New Skills

"I have gained lots of new skills as this is completely different to what I have done before. I have got better at using computer systems and have developed better soldering skills and an understanding of what may cause faults on boards."

The Most Rewarding Part

"The most rewarding part of my apprenticeship has been being able to keep the pass rate high for the cameras going out. I have also been able to test my skills and try new designs."

Future Plans

"I plan on continuing to develop my skills and keep learning. I’m planning on staying with the company and seeing what opportunities appear."

My Advice

"Give it a go! You may like it more than you think. The people around you are there to help you learn; they were once in the same shoes. There are many opportunities after your apprenticeship which your employer may throw at you. Being a girl in a male-dominated industry isn’t as scary as people may think."

Iain Campbell - Fabrication and Welding

Course: SVQ Fabrication & Welding Engineering SCQF 6
Location: Stornoway
Employer: Navantia UK

Why I chose this course
"Originally, I planned to do a deck cadetship in the merchant navy, but I ultimately chose this apprenticeship because both my grandfathers and my uncle worked at the Arnish yard for many years as platers and pipefitters. It also offered a variety of career paths. Another big factor was that the training was all based locally, meaning I wouldn’t have to travel between the island and the mainland, and I could earn while I learned."

My learning experience
"The apprenticeship is a mix of on-site and college-based learning over three years. Most of the training happens at college in the beginning, but as time goes on, you spend more time on-site. A typical day in the yard involves welding and fabricating steel components and sections for a range of projects, from ocean-going vessels to subsea manifolds."

Skills gained
"Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve earned welder coding certifications in FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) and gained hands-on experience using grinders, burning torches, plasma cutters, wiring, plating, CAD, lathes, and more. These skills have been developed through both college training and practical experience in the yard. I’ve also improved my communication skills while working with colleagues."

Achievements
"During my apprenticeship, I’ve earned an NC in Engineering Systems, an SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations, and a Lloyd’s welder certification. I’m now working towards my SVQ Level 3 in Performing Engineering Operations. Another highlight has been meeting people I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise."

Next steps
"After completing my apprenticeship, I plan to stay at the yard for a while to become a time-served welder. Beyond that, I’m not entirely sure yet, but I’d like to explore offshore or deep-sea opportunities, as I originally intended."

Advice for future apprentices
"I’d definitely recommend this apprenticeship to anyone looking to enter the engineering sector, learn a trade, and earn while they train. It’s also a great option for those who want to stay on the island rather than travel to the mainland for further education. Plus, the skills you gain can open up many different career paths."

Why did you choose a Modern Apprenticeship?

I chose this apprenticeship as I was aware of the fantastic training Dounreay provides. In Lockdown I grew an interest in business and decided that it was the route I wanted to go down. When I heard about this apprenticeship I straight away knew I wanted to apply, I thought it would be a great way to start my career as Dounreay offers so many great opportunities to its staff.

Do you have any scheduled classes as part of your apprenticeship? How do these take place and how do they fit in with your working schedule?

The course was very flexible and fitted in with my day-to-day work very well. We had a couple of classes at the start of the year to introduce us to the course and then we were able to work on our portfolio whenever suited us, as long as we were meeting deadlines, which was never an issue.

What do you think about the style of teaching and/or support you received from assessors/lecturers?

My lecturer was very approachable and helpful. I felt able to email her whenever I was unsure of something or needed more information and she would always get back to me or arrange a video call for us to discuss things further.

What challenges have you encountered during your apprenticeship and how did you overcome them?

While completing my SVQ and my day-to-day tasks, I also studied for an ECITB (Engineering Construction Industry Training Board) Certificate in Project Controls. This was very challenging as Project Controls was very new to me. I overcame this challenge by asking my colleagues for more information and by reading through the procedures, guidance notes and forms relating to Project Controls at Dounreay.

What are your next steps after completing your Modern Apprenticeship?

I am now in a full-time administration post and am thoroughly enjoying it. I plan to start an HNC this year which will allow me to study a Degree in Business Management. I am aiming to become a Project Controller and I hope that in time, once I have gained more experience and completed these qualifications, I can progress to working at management level.

What advice would you give to those considering a Modern Apprenticeship?

To anyone considering a Modern Apprenticeship, go for it! It has been the best decision I have ever made. My teamwork, communication, IT skills and problem solving skills have improved significantly during my apprenticeship. My knowledge on Dounreay and the Nuclear industry as a whole, has significantly advanced too. Overall, I have become a much more confident person.

What has been the highlight of your Modern Apprenticeship?

It is hard to pick one highlight as there have been so many positive experiences during my time as an apprentice. However, our team-building trip to Loch Eil was an amazing experience, where I developed great relationships with my colleagues and also improved my team-work, communication and problem-solving skills. I had to really push myself out with my comfort zone during the trip and I am so glad that I did as I have realised my capabilities and am very grateful for the opportunity.

Name: Steven Rollo

Qualification: SVQ Fabrication and Welding Engineering at SCQF Level 6

Job Title: Welder-Fabricator

Employer: Lochshell Engineering

Why did you choose a Modern Apprenticeship?

I chose a Modern Apprenticeship as it is a lifelong qualification where I can learn skills within the Welding and Fabricating industry. It also gave me an opportunity to work alongside experienced staff picking up specific skills crucial to the industry.

Do you have any scheduled classes as part of your MA?

At the start of my Modern Apprenticeship, I did have scheduled classes which would take place in person on a weekly basis. I'm now in my 4th year and all my work has been online through OneFile.

How do they fit in with your working schedule?

I do a couple of hours most nights at home online completing my OneFile portfolio.

What do you think about the style of teaching and/or support you received from assessors/lecturers?

I think the teaching style is very good. I have received lots of support from my college lecturer Terry Elder who has always given me a quick response when I have a question about my OneFile work. My assessor Liam Sutherland has also been supportive too whenever I have had a question or was unsure about something.

What challenges have you encountered during your apprenticeship and how did you overcome them?

I would say the online OneFile work to start with took a bit to get into the swing of how to do it such as setting criteria and referencing it to the job card but I contacted Liam Sutherland and Terry Elder and they supported me and helped me understand it.

What are your next steps after completing your Modern Apprenticeship?

To carry on within the industry improving my skills along the way as I really enjoy it and will try to be the best I can be.

What advice would you give to those considering a Modern Apprenticeship?

I would say a Modern Apprenticeship isn’t easy. It takes a lot of work and commitment to get yourself through it but if you apply yourself and get the work done, it more than pays itself off when you have completed it.

What has been the highlight of your Modern Apprenticeship?

The highlight of my apprenticeship was the assembly of Whitby Bridge, seeing it being fitted and being part of a major engineering project, which required us all to work as a team.

Anything else you would like to tell us about your experience?

My boss Donald Gow and my tradesman Charlie Donaldson, have been really supportive of me throughout my apprenticeship and often share their own knowledge and experience.

Sandra Gow, Director at Gow’s Lybster Ltd

"We believe modern apprenticeships open doors to talented individuals who may not follow traditional degree pathways. By allowing apprentices to combine education and employment, they gain essential practical skills while earning. This approach ultimately strengthens our business and helps us build a more capable, future-ready workforce."

David Craigie, Imenco content Imenco Apprentices

David Craigie, Imenco

"During recent recruitment drives, we recognised a downturn in relevant experience in our area. Combined with the specialised nature of our business, this presented an ideal opportunity to recruit and train apprentices.

UHI North, West and Hebrides is vital to our apprentices’ journeys. Maintaining close ties with the university and local high schools is essential to ensuring we select the right candidates for our business needs. Furthermore, collaborating closely with UHI staff ensures our apprentices gain the correct qualifications and progress at the required rate.

Having a local campus allows our apprentices to work and learn without having to travel or spend time away from home. The day-release format is especially beneficial, as it allows them to remain integrated in the workplace, gaining essential skills and developing relationships with their fellow employees. Modern Apprenticeships provide more than just employment and education; they are key to retaining the skills and individuals needed to strengthen our local community for years to come."

"At Ecosystems Technologies, we see Modern Apprenticeships as an essential investment in both our business and the wider Highlands community. As a growing company operating in Invergordon, we recognise the real challenges of finding skilled people and, just as importantly, retaining that talent locally. Supporting apprentices allows us to develop the skills we need whilst creating meaningful career opportunities here in the Highlands.

Ryan Mackay is a great example of the positive impact Modern Apprenticeships can have. Now in his third year of Carpentry and Joinery at UHI Thurso, Ryan has been part of our team since September 2024. After his studies were previously disrupted due to Covid, we were keen to support him in getting back on track and continuing his qualification. His commitment, combined with the hands-on experience he gains with us, demonstrates exactly how valuable the apprenticeship pathway can be – for both the individual and the employer.

As our business and team continue to grow, so too does demand for our services – in providing a home grown, sustainable, modular, off-site product. Modern Apprenticeships give us the opportunity to shape and develop the next generation of skilled professionals, ensuring our workforce grows sustainably and with the right expertise. We are proud to support Ryan and would actively encourage other businesses across the region to consider apprenticeships as a way to strengthen their teams whilst investing in the future of the Highlands."

"We have been collaborating with UHI North, West and Hebrides for several years. We are so lucky that due to this partnership, we can continue to offer a fulfilling and meaningful apprenticeship alongside quality on-the-job training within The Caithness Collection. Through this partnership, our team has gone from strength to strength in achieving their ambitions in Hospitality and beyond. One of our initial priorities when setting up The Caithness Collection was to facilitate worthwhile careers in hospitality and to provide a learning platform showcasing Hospitality as a career of choice without having to leave the beauty of Caithness."

“Modern Apprenticeships benefits our staff as they are able to work while gaining a qualification which enhances them in their role. As we are a stand-alone company it can be expensive to put staff through their necessary qualifications, thus we can only put a few forward at a time. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme allows us to have more of our staff gaining qualifications at one time as it is of no extra cost to us.”
