A college + university like no other  

With 19 campuses and centres across the North and West Highlands, Skye, and Outer Hebrides, we cover a geographic area larger than Wales, comprising 40% of Scotland’s coastline. Our campuses and centres are located within historic towns and villages, set amongst the shorelines, mountains, and moors, with local staff working across our region to support our students and communities.   

 

Position: We are seeking a Refectory Assistant, to be based at our Stornoway campus. 

 

Responsibilities: To assist in the preparation of food including light meals, vegetables, salads, making and presenting hot and cold sandwiches.  

Front of house café services including customer service, cash handling, etc.  

Assisting with food service as required.  

Providing a hospitality service to clients in offices and classrooms as directed throughout the College.   

Washing up of crockery, cutlery, and kitchen utensils, ensuring good health and safety practice.  

Maintaining a clean working environment by ensuring regular cleaning of all tables, works surfaces, equipment, kitchen areas and stores.  

To stock and empty food counters as appropriate.  

To operate as a team member and cover for colleagues as required.  

To receive and store goods.  

To assist the cafe supervisor or cook in delivery of a successful cafe operation. 

 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills: The successful candidate will have the necessary  understanding of food safety and health and safety requirements, together with an industry-relevant food preparation qualification. Previous experience of working in a kitchen or café environment, including cash handling, is desirable. The role requires a polite, friendly and motivated individual with a flexible approach to duties and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. The candidate should have good organisational skills and be able to multitask while working in a busy café environment. 

 

A level of Gaelic ability would be advantageous to your application. 

 

Salary: NSUP06 per annum, pro rata  

Location: Stornoway 

Working Hours: 30 hours, Permanent, Term time. 

Closing Date: 8th October 2026
