UHI North, West and Hebrides opens applications for over 20 new courses across the Highlands and Islands

UHI North, West and Hebrides is expanding its curriculum with over 20 new courses designed to equip learners with the skills needed in some of the region's most vital and growing industries.

Developed in direct response to identified skills gaps across the Highlands and Islands, the new programmes span a wide range of sectors, from engineering and software development to social care, business, admin and tourism to counselling, aquaculture and animal welfare. With a mix of on-campus, online and work-based learning options, the courses are designed to be accessible to learners at different stages of life and career.

New on-campus courses are being introduced at campuses across the region, including Applied Sciences, Introduction to Engineering Practices and 12 week Social Care Introductory Programme in Thurso; Art and Design in Auchtertyre, Fort William and Portree; Beauty Therapy Skills and HNC Contemporary Art Practice in Fort William; Counselling programmes in Stornoway; and Countryside Skills with Ranger Training in Abriachan.

For those already in work, new employer-facing routes include an SVQ in Aquaculture Management, a nationally recognised vocational qualification delivered in partnership with industry. Also on offer is a Graduate Apprenticeship in Software Development, which allows employees to earn a full degree while continuing to work, developed in close partnership with IBM, ensuring that learning is grounded in current industry practice. The college has also launched a Lantra Diploma in Veterinary Care and Animal Welfare, combining online learning with hands-on placement experience for those looking to develop a career in the animal care sector.

Alongside new campus-based programmes, UHI North, West and Hebrides is expanding its online provision. New courses in business, tourism, computing & digital media, game art and animation, childhood practice, study skills and palliative care will enable learners across the region to gain industry-relevant skills and qualifications without needing to relocate. Online virtual classroom and self-directed study options are designed to fit around work, family and other commitments.

Lydia Rohmer, Principal and Chief Executive of UHI North, West and Hebrides, said:

"These new courses have been shaped by what employers, communities and learners across our region are telling us they need. Whether someone is looking to retrain, take their first steps into further education, or progress in a career they're already building, we want there to be a route here for them.
"From aquaculture and engineering to counselling and land management, these programmes connect people with real opportunities and connect our communities with the skilled workforce they need to thrive."

Applications are now open, with courses beginning in August/September 2026. Anyone interested in studying business can also join an online open evening, on Wednesday 17th June to find out more about the new business courses, speak with staff and ask questions about studying with UHI North, West and Hebrides.
