UHI North, West and Hebrides fashion students showcase creativity in end-of-year exhibition
Fashion students at UHI North, West and Hebrides' Stornoway campus are showcasing the results of months of creativity, research and artistry in their end-of-year exhibition.
The exhibition, on display in the college foyer throughout the summer, features an inspiring collection of original garments designed and produced as part of the students' final projects. Each piece reflects the individual vision, technical skill and creative journey of its designer.
The finished garments showcase the wide range of skills students develop throughout their studies, from understanding creative briefs and conducting design research to pattern cutting, garment construction and fashion illustration using both traditional and digital techniques.
Sallie Avis, Fashion and Design, lecturer said: “Our fashion course is a hands-on journey through the full process of clothing manufacture - from pattern drafting and garment construction to trend research and illustration. It’s an ideal place for students to build solid industry skills or elevate the ones they already have.”
Fashion Student Dominique Sibley reflects on her experience, she said: "I would 100% recommend this course to others. It is such a rewarding course, not only are you learning skills that can be worked with for business, but these are also life skills.
“The support from tutors was brilliant; it really helped to boost confidence and being practical allowed me to pick up the skills quicker. Having such supportive staff was, I think, the making of this course learning from such passionate individuals is invaluable.”
The Fashion course at UHI North, West and Hebrides provides students with a strong foundation in practical and creative skills while encouraging them to explore the evolving role of fashion within the wider creative industries. Alongside developing their own design portfolios, students gain an understanding of sustainable fashion and how the industry is adapting through new business models and innovative approaches to design and production.
Throughout the course, students are introduced to a range of digital technologies that enhance both their creative practice and digital capabilities, preparing them for further study and employment in the sector.
Designed for both school leavers and mature students returning to education, the course offers an accessible entry point into the creative industries. Graduates leave with a professional portfolio that supports progression to higher education in fashion, textiles, art and design, as well as providing the skills and confidence to pursue careers across the creative sector.
Career pathways include fashion and textiles design, fashion merchandising, buying, marketing, journalism, public relations, styling and costume design.
The exhibition is open to visitors during normal college opening hours throughout the summer, offering an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of this year's students and gain an insight into the creative talent being nurtured at UHI North, West and Hebrides.
