Alex McCauley and Amy Robertson each received £600 at end-of-year celebrations held at the Broadford and Portree campuses. These events were also supported by EDP Renewables, who continue to support the local community through ongoing sponsorship and engagement.

Alex McCauley, who studied Outdoor Adventure at the Broadford campus, and Amy Robertson, who completed her HNC in Business at the Portree centre, were selected for their outstanding contributions over the academic year.

Alex said: “Winning this award came as a total surprise – I didn’t even know I had been nominated.  It’s been a fantastic year learning new skills and adjusting to a totally different environment away from my hometown of Edinburgh.  I was just delighted to be able to share the celebration with the classmates I’ve spent the last year with and to have had such a beautiful day really topped it all off.  I’m very grateful to EDP for such a generous cash award too and will be spending some of it towards getting my Mountain Leader Training to pursue more adventures in future.”

Alex now plans to progress to the next level of study on the Outdoor Leadership course in Fort William.

Amy said : "Studying the HNC Business course at UHI North, West and Hebrides - Portree has been a fantastic experience. My favourite part of the course was economics, even though it was the most challenging subject, it challenged me academically and helped me explore a part of business I wouldn’t have normally chosen. I’m planning to use the prize money to buy a new laptop for university, where I’ll be continuing my studies in business.

The staff both online and in Portree college centre were all amazing and friendly, and the online platform made it really easy to contact them and ask questions whenever I needed help. I also met people I never would’ve met otherwise, which made the experience even better.  This course has definitely helped me feel more prepared and excited for what’s next."

Applications are now open for a wide range of courses starting in September across the college’s 19 campuses and centres.
