Dornoch student wins major British university golf competition
A UHI North, West and Hebrides student has won a major British university golf competition, beating a field featuring some of the country’s leading student golfers and high-ranking world amateurs.
Josh Beveridge, a third-year BA (Hons) Professional Golf student who studies in Dornoch, won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Golf Tour Autumn Trophy by one shot after three outstanding rounds.
The 21-year-old carded rounds of 67, 69 and 72 for a three-round total of 208.
The victory at Alyth Golf Club is the biggest success of Josh’s senior golfing career and makes him the first UHI student to win the BUCS Golf Tour Autumn Trophy.
Josh, who plays off a handicap of +3, was previously a member of the Scottish junior squad and finished runner-up in the 2025 Scottish University Strokeplay Championship.
He said: “It feels great to have won. I knew I was capable of it, but I honestly didn’t expect it. I’m really pleased.
“My time at UHI North, West and Hebrides has been invaluable when it comes to developing my skills. I think it’s one of the best places to learn golf in the world. My ambition now is to go pro, and my time in Dornoch has been absolutely vital in turning that into a realistic goal.”
Josh is also joint captain of the UHI golf team and has played a key role in the team’s success. His latest achievement will see him awarded a full Blue for golf at his graduation, presented to athletes of outstanding ability judged against their sport’s national standard.
Lesley Mackay, Programme Leader for Professional Golf, added: “Josh’s win is a fantastic achievement and reflects the level of commitment he has shown throughout his time at UHI North, West and Hebrides.
“To win by one shot against such a strong field is a highly significant accomplishment. Josh has also made a huge contribution to our UHI golf team as joint captain and it is brilliant to see him achieve this success on the national stage.”
