What is special about this course?

The SVQ Hairdressing SCQF 6 offers progression for individuals who have completed the SCQF 5 course or those who have extensive work experience and are looking to advance their skills in hairstyling.

The programme offers an advanced exploration of the craft, refining and learning new techniques such as advanced colouring, cutting and styling. The curriculum includes units that are essential in becoming a full stylist, and places emphasis on salon management skills, health and safety and promotion of products and services, preparing students for leadership roles within the industry.

You will benefit from learning at our commercial salon, House of Morven, giving you the practical knowledge and customer skills required to develop & maintain positive working relationships with customers and members of your work team. 

 

This full or part time course is for hairdressers with salon experience. In addition to learning the theoretical aspects of hairdressing, you will also be able to gain invaluable practical experience by being a part of the commercial training salon based in House of Morven on the main campus. The SVQ level 3 Hairdressing covers units which are essential to become a full stylist.

Entry requirements

  • SVQ Hairdressing SCQF 5 OR extensive work experience.

Please note that applying for this course does not guarantee a Modern Apprenticeship place, your application will be discussed with you in the first instance.

The subjects studied are those essential to a full stylist, including:

  • Consult, assess, plan and prepare for hair, barbering, beauty, nails, wellbeing and holistic services 
  • Implement and maintain safe, hygienic and effective working practices
  • Creatively set, style, dress and finish hair using advanced techniques
  • Combine hairdressing techniques to create a bespoke restyle look
  • Creatively colour and lighten the hair using advanced techniques
  • Provide hair colour corrective services 
  • Provide hair smoothing treatments
  • Attach hair using heat, chemical adhesive and/or advanced techniques

Attendance for the full-time course is over one academic session, if attending on a day-release basis this will take two academic years.

Blended delivery - Students will carry out practical learning in our commercial salon and will complete some theory elements of the course online through our Virtual Learning Environment.
