What is special about this course?

Do you enjoy working with horses and would you like to find out more about their needs and how to manage them? This programme of study is an ideal starting point for anyone wanting to work in the equine sector or for dedicated horse owners looking to expand their knowledge of horse care. Success in this programme of study can also count towards entry to our equine degree programme. 

This course is available in Aberdeenshire, Western Isles, Lochaber, Sutherland, Caithness, Nairn, Inverness, Moray, Angus, Fife and Orkney. Please contact our Horse Care Coordinator for more information on the course locations: horsecare.nwh@uhi.ac.uk

There are no formal entry requirements but knowledge of the subject area would be beneficial. The course begins at SCQF 4 but entry at SCQF 5 or above would be at the discretion of the tutor depending on your prior experience.

A wide range of topic areas at SCQF 4-6 including:

  • Horse identification and handling a quiet horse safely
  • Assist with grooming a quiet horse
  • Tack and tacking up
  • Stable routine
  • Horse health
  • Watering and feeding
  • Horse care: lungeing
  • Horse care: trimming, turnout and clipping
  • Tacking up for ridden competition work

How will I study my course?

You normally need to commit to around 2 hours per week of scheduled class time and 2 hours per week of self-study. Delivery mode varies between flexi tutors.

Timetabled learning will generally take place in a yard setting with a flexi tutor who will focus on the practical aspects of the course while you study the theory in your own time.

SCQF 4 in Horse Care (NPA4) consists of 4 units, SCQF 5 in Horse Care (NC) consists of 12 units and SCQF 6 (NPA6) consists of 4 units. Each unit is taught flexibly and the timetable and length of courses will be agreed with your flexi tutor.

Equipment

Students should have suitable footwear to work with horses when doing practical activities.  Some centres may be able to provide a riding hat for working with horses, however, students may require their own riding hat for working with and handling horses.

What can I do on completion of my course?

  • Progress on to other equine courses, including HNC Equine Studies or BA (Hons) Equine Business Management.
  • Enhanced career prospects within the equestrian industry.
