The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) is part of UHI North, West and Hebrides, Thurso, one of the academic partners of UHI. Our mission is to ‘provide dynamic leadership in research, innovation and education that advances understanding and informs management of our natural environment’. Within the ERI’s, the ‘Peatlands” team seeks to provide underpinning evidence that can drive changes in policy and practice to ensure a resilient future for the peatlands of the Highlands and Islands region, and a just transition for its people. This includes supportive innovative solutions and informing best practice in the context of onshore renewable development on peatland.

RWE is a leading power generator in the UK, supplying around 15% of the country’s electricity with a diverse operational portfolio of onshore wind, offshore win, hydro, biomass and gas. RWE has an ambition to grow further in the UK, delivering new investments in new gree technology and infrastructure to support energy transition and contribute to achieving UK Government’s net zero commitment by 2050, and a goal to become climate neutral by 2040. A key part of this strategy will involve embedding peatland expertise in the onshore wind team to develop cost-effective and site-specific peat management strategies that will optimise cost-efficiency and maximise positive outcomes for climate and biodiversity.

To do this, we now seek to appoint a highly motivated Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate to become the new Peat Management and Restoration Project Officer at RWE, joint funded by Innovate UK and RWE. The successful candidate researcher will be based in Inverness team and develop work across sites in Caithness. They will have access to ERI’s facilities in the centre of Thurso for training and project development.
