What is special about this course?

This SCQF Level 6 qualification in Social Services and Healthcare is designed for those working with older or vulnerable adults and looking to gain a recognised, work-based award while continuing in their role.

Accredited by SQA and meeting the registration requirements for the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), this award supports the development of knowledge, skills and professional practice needed to provide physical, emotional and social support in care settings.

Through a combination of workplace observation, practical application, and portfolio building - alongside open learning materials and dedicated support from your tutor/assessor - you'll work towards a qualification that reflects your competence and commitment in delivering high-quality care.

Entry requirements

  • Suitable employment full or part-time, voluntary or paid, in social services and healthcare
  • Work in a care setting at a support level for a minimum of 3 months
  • Demonstrate your ability to write at SCQF level 5 or above with appropriate literacy skills
  • Full-time students: successful completion of the NC Child, Health and Social Care or relevant work experience

The aim of this course is to credit you for competencies gained in the workplace and it will allow you to register with the Scottish Social Services Council. You will cover 4 mandatory and 2 optional units. 

The mandatory units are:

  • Promote effective communication. 
  • Promote health, safety and security in the work setting. 
  • Develop your practice through reflection and learning. 
  • Promote the safeguarding of individuals. 

The optional units will be chosen with you and tailored to the area of care in which you work.

How will I study my course?

You will be supported in the workplace to complete your units and attend a weekly online drop-in with your assessor to assist you in completing your portfolio of evidence.
