What is special about this course?

Kick-start your career in hospitality with this 18-week course leading to an SVQ in Hospitality Services (SCQF Level 5).

You'll spend two days a week at college and two days on placement in a local hospitality business. This mix of classroom learning and real workplace experience means you'll see how the industry works while developing the skills employers want.

With support from experienced hospitality professionals, you'll build confidence, gain hands-on experience, and achieve a recognised qualification to strengthen your CV and set you up for success in the sector.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course but all applicants will be invited to attend an interview.

Over 18 weeks, you'll build skills and gather evidence towards your SVQ in Hospitality Services (SCQF Level 5). The course is hands-on and varied, giving you the chance to experience different aspects of the industry.

Core areas include:

  • Health and safety in hospitality
  • Working effectively as part of a team
  • Professional behaviour in the workplace
  • Food safety in hospitality environments
  • Housekeeping skills such as making beds and handling linen
  • Setting up and running a specialist coffee station
  • Preparing and serving hot and cold drinks
  • Food and beverage service, including table service and casual dining

Additional training and enhancements:

  • Barista skills
  • Elementary Food Hygiene
  • Allergen awareness training
  • CV building and career preparation

Two days each week will be spent on placement in a local hospitality business. Here, you'll gain real insight into the industry, from food and beverage service to food preparation and accommodation.

On campus, you'll develop the theory to support your practical skills and take part in pop-up restaurants at our professional training restaurant, Flagstones, providing a safe, hands-on environment to practise service techniques, build confidence, and work as part of a team.

Equipment

This course will require you to have essential equipment/clothing.  If you are under 18, you are entitled to have essential equipment paid for whether you are entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) or not. 

If you are 18 and over and are eligible for a bursary, these costs will be met through your bursary.  If you are not eligible for a bursary, you will need to fund these items yourself.

How will I study my course?

    You need to commit to four days of blended learning time consisting of timetabled learning, work placement and personal study. Timetabled learning will take place on Wednesday and Thursday. Two days per week will be dedicated to work placement (days and times to be negotiated with your work placement provider).
