What is special about this course?

This programme combines the NC Welding and Fabrication with the SVQ Performing Engineering Operations SCQF 5 (Fabrication and Welding Route). These qualifications satisfy the foundation training for a modern apprenticeship in fabrication and welding engineering.

School leavers

  • Three National 4 qualifications including Maths, English and a technical/science subject.
  • SQA skills for work engineering would also be an advantage.
  • Satisfactory interview.

Mature students

  • Relevant post school education and training.
  • Satisfactory interview.

Progressing students

  • Access to Construction and Engineering with bridging Maths at SCQF Level 5.
  • Satisfactory interview.

  • Practical skills in welding processes such as MMA, MIG, TIG NDT
  • Fabrication plate work and thermal cutting
  • Interpreting specifications, drawings and plans
  • Health and safety
  • Engineering, maths and information technology
  • You will also develop your core, employability, enterprise and citizenship skills.

On successful completion of the course, you will gain an SQA National Certificate in Fabrication and Welding Engineering and an EAL Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF 5.

This course requires students to purchase a kit/uniform (around £66.92). If you are eligible for a bursary, these kit costs will be covered.

What can I do on completion of my course?

  • Successful completion of this course can be used to help you secure employment as a second year apprentice, as the course provides you with the necessary qualifications that satisfy the foundation training for the Modern Apprenticeship in Fabrication and Welding Engineering. 
  • NC Engineering Systems: Mechanical production and maintenance engineering or electrical, control and instrumentation installation and maintenance engineering.
