Counselling Skills: An Introduction SCQF 6 (Stornoway) NPA
What is special about this course?
This course is designed for people with no previous experience of counselling. The course will introduce you to the main theoretical schools of counselling and the historical development of each. You will investigate the psycho dynamic, humanistic and behaviourist schools of counselling and the role of the counsellor using each approach. This is an introductory course to provide underpinning and basic knowledge of the subject. The 'concept' of counselling reflects the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling. This course does not permit you to refer to yourself as a qualified counsellor.
Entry requirements
You should preferably hold the Counselling: an introduction award SCQF 5 or be able to demonstrate the ability to study at SCQF level 6.
Throughout this course, you will learn to:
- Investigate the key principles of the psychodynamic school of counselling, including how past experiences can influence thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
- Explore the behavioural school of counselling, focusing on how behaviour is learned and how it can be changed.
- Examine the humanistic school of counselling, which emphasises personal growth, self-awareness and individual potential.
- Reflect on your own learning and development, building essential counselling skills such as active listening, empathy and self-awareness.
