What is special about this course?

Science shapes the world around us, from everyday technology to medical breakthroughs. The National Certificate in Applied Sciences is ideal if you enjoy science but are unsure whether chemistry, biology or physics is right for you. The course introduces you to all three areas while developing practical laboratory and investigative skills.

At SCQF level 6, you will study a range of units including physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, microbiology and environmental science, with a strong focus on hands-on practical work. You will also develop mathematical and research skills relevant to scientific study.

Successful completion allows progression to HNC Applied Sciences or related courses, university study in science-based subjects, or employment in roles such as laboratory assistant or trainee Technician.

Entry requirements

  • Two National 5 qualifications in Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Grade C or above, National 5 Mathematics at Grade C or above, and National 5 English at Grade C or above.
  • Those with sufficient experience of working in a laboratory or science field will be considered on experience and interview.

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

Blended, on-campus and online: You will have a combination of on-campus, timetabled classes and online, timetabled classes in a virtual classroom. You'll also use our virtual learning environment to access resources and complete assessments.  

Monday: 9.00 am - 12.45 pm (mandatory timetabled classes)
Tuesday: 9.00 am - 3.15 pm (mandatory timetabled classes)
Wednesday: 9.00 am - 3.15 pm (mandatory timetabled classes)
You will also need to undertake 3 hours of personal study.

What can I do on completion of my course?

The award at level 6 is designed for: school leavers, adult returners who wish to progress to HN or gain entry to apprenticeship programmes. Successful learners may progress to laboratory employment at either the laboratory assistant level or as trainee science technicians. The National Certificate at level 6 would also provide entry into the Modern Apprenticeship in Chemicals Manufacturing and Petroleum Industries SVQ level 3 and Laboratory Technicians SVQ level 3.
