ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages SCQF 6 (Online Virtual Classroom)
What is special about this course?
Would you like to learn how to speak English, or improve the English you already know? ESOL courses are for learners whose first language is not English. You will study reading, writing, listening and speaking so you can apply your growing knowledge of language in practical and relevant situations. These ESOL qualifications correspond with levels B1 to C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
We welcome all learners who want come to class to improve their English and gain a recognised SQA qualification in a supportive and friendly environment.
You will study for an SQA ESOL qualification at SCQF level 4 – 6 (depending on how good your English is).
Entry requirements
What equipment you need to study will depend on the level you study at. If your language skills are N4-6, then it will be necessary to have an internet connection and a suitable device with headphones, microphone and camera (minimum spec). Please email us if you have any concerns about connectivity or equipment.
You will study these units:
National 4
ESOL for Everyday Life develops the language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) needed for everyday life in personal, social and transactional contexts. For example: providing personal information, talking to friends, and shopping.
ESOL in Context develops the language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) needed for work- or study-related contexts. For example: Writing CVs, emails, or study skills.
You will also undertake an Added Value Unit (a mini project).
National 5
ESOL for Everyday Life develops the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking needed for everyday life in personal, social and transactional contexts. The broad social context is intended to support candidates who need to use English as the language of everyday communication.
ESOL in Context develops the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the familiar contexts of work and study. The broad context of study is intended to support candidates who need to develop their academic English skills so that they can apply them to other subjects or courses they may be undertaking or wish to undertake in the future. The broad context of work is intended to support candidates who need to develop their English language skills for work so that they can apply them in seeking work and in current or future workplaces.
Higher
ESOL for Everyday Life develops the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking needed for effective communication in everyday life in personal, social and transactional contexts. The broad social context supports candidates who need to use English as the language of everyday communication.
ESOL in Work-related Contexts develops the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking needed for effective communication in the context of work. There is a particular focus on the development of speaking and writing skills in this context. The broad context of work supports candidates who need to develop their English language skills for employment. They can apply these skills when seeking work and entering employment.
ESOL in Study-related Contexts develops the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking needed for effective communication in the context of study. There is a particular focus on the development of speaking and writing skills in this context. The broad context of study supports candidates who need to develop their academic English skills. They can apply these skills to other subjects or courses they do.
How will I study my course?

We will learn together online.
Connected learning is when you learn together with lecturers and other students. It may include:
• tutor presentations
• group discussions
• sharing ideas
• small group or pair work
Connected learning will take place at the same time each week in an online classroom.
Flexible learning will be set weekly and can be completed at a time that is convenient for you. Flexible learning could include:
• completing a quiz
• practising a task or activity
• watching a video or reading
• researching and gathering information
• completing an assignment

What can I do on completion of my course?
If you complete ESOL at National 4 or higher, you can apply to study courses other than ESOL. You must have an ESOL qualification equal or higher to the course you are considering. For example, if you want to study professional cookery and hospitality NC level 5 you must have ESOL N5 or higher.
