Game and Wildlife Management Modern Apprenticeship SCQF 5 SVQ

What is special about this course?

This Modern Apprenticeship initiative offers people the chance to work towards achieving an SVQ in Game and Wildlife Management at SCQF Level 5. The programme is a combination of work-based and college training (online and face-to-face) and provides the dual benefit of students gaining a nationally recognised qualification while being paid as they work.  

This Modern Apprenticeship consists of an SVQ, Core Skills and Enhancements.

Entry requirements

Candidates should be employed within the relevant sector and be able to demonstrate an interest and desire to work in or experience of working in, the field of wildlife management. 

Candidates must be of a reasonably high standard of physical fitness

Potential MA Gamekeeping candidates should hold a qualification in:

• Communication/English at SCQF Level 3
• Numeracy at SCQF Level 3
• ICT at SCQF Level 3

Or equivalent qualifications

and

be able to demonstrate an interest and desire to work in, or experience of working in, the field of gamekeeping.

Candidates without evidence of achievement of formal academic qualifications as above will be asked to undertake a short ‘profile’ document to demonstrate ability of core skills at these levels.

This Modern Apprenticeship framework is developed by the sector skills council, LANTRA, in consultation with employers and key partners in the industry. The course can be tailored towards the specific needs of the employer but will typically contain core skills and industry-specific units from a choice of two different pathways – Upland Grouse Route and Deer Route.  

These include: 

Upland Grouse Route - 13 Mandatory units: 

• Prepare Sporting Aids and Equipment to Support Game Shooting Activities 
• Support Game Shooting Activities 
• Use Shotguns and Rifles Safely for Pest Control and Sporting Purposes 
• Monitor Game Populations and Habitats 
• Support Game Populations 
• Carry Out Prescribed Burning Activities as Part of Vegetation Management 
• Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security 
• Establish and Maintain Working Relationships with Others 
• Control Vertebrate Pests and Predators Using Traps 
• Control Vertebrate Pests and Predators by Shooting 
• Assist Game Shooting by Loading Shotguns 
• Stalk and Cull Deer 
• Prepare Large Game Carcasses for Entry into the Human Food Chain 

Deer Route – (7 mandatory units and three optional units):

• Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security 
• Monitor Game Populations and Habitats 
• Stalk and Cull Deer 
• Prepare Large Game Carcasses for Entry into the Human Food Chain 
• Use Shotguns and Rifles Safely for Pest Control and Sporting Purposes 
• Establish and Maintain Working Relationships with Others 
• Control Vertebrate Pests and Predators by Shooting 

Optional Units – (3 to be selected) 

• HY6L 04 - Prepare Sporting Aids and Equipment to Support Game Shooting Activities 
• Support Game Shooting Activities 
• Assist Game Shooting by Loading Shotguns 
• Carry Out Prescribed Burning Activities as Part of Vegetation Management 
• Support Game Populations 
• Control Vertebrate Pests and Predators Using Traps 
• Construct Paths or Surfaces 
• Maintain and Repair Paths or Surfaces 
• Construct Structures 
• Maintain and Repair Structures 
• Monitor Access to a Wildlife Management Area 
• Core Skills 

The Communication, Working with Others and Problem Solving Core Skills are fully embedded within the Game and Wildlife Management (Upland/Grouse) SVQ at SCQF Level 5 therefore these core skills are not required to be delivered as part of the MA. The Information and Communication Technology and Numeracy Core Skills will be delivered and assessed if the candidate does not already hold these core skills. 

Enhancements 

One Enhancement or more must be chosen and agreed with the assessor from a list provided by LANTRA such as; 

• Dear Stalking Certificate 
• All-Terrain Vehicle Handling 
• Snaring and Safe Use of Snares

Funding

Funding is available from Skills Development Scotland to contribute towards the costs of the apprentices training under the Modern Apprenticeship Programme for all young people between the ages of 16-19 for all frameworks. Funding may also be available for young people between the ages of 20 -24 and 25+ however this is dependant on the framework and sector.
